Peter
Donaghy established Datanets in June 2000. Based in Strabane, Datanets
supply IT solutions to both the business and home user, including
implementing large systems in the public and private sectors, from
small office based network (Local Area Network, LAN) connected through
dedicated cabling through to installing large Wide Area Networks.
(WAN) situated in different geographical locations using dedicated
lines (ISDN, Leased Line, Optic Cabling, etc.) together with the
latest wireless Bluetooth technology where appropriate.

Why did you start your own business?
I identified a definite opening in the market, wanted to make money
and thought just go for it.

What do you like best about being your own boss?
In a word : Independence
3.
What do you dislike most about working for yourself?
Well more than one word needed here; no fixed hours, no security,
need to watch everything & everybody all of the time.
4.
Name three things you would do differently if you were starting
again?
There
are a number of things I'd do differently including more research.
I would have worked in a similar environment for a year or two.
I would have tried to get a big financial backer.

Michael Doherty - Michael
Doherty Oils
Michael
is 21 years old and one of Northern Ireland's youngest oil barons!
With previous experience working for Pattersons, he began exploring
the opportunity of starting his own business with Omagh Enterprise
Company. He opened in May 2000 and now successfully retails home
heating oil, agriculture diesel, oil tanks and lubricants. Based
on the Derry Road in Omagh, the forecourt also has a carwash and
valeting service along with petrol and diesel pumps.
Recently
Michael opened premises in Clady in an attempt to capture the market
in Derry, Strabane, and Donegal. With total staff numbering 7 he
continues to grow all aspects of his business and projects turnover
of £1.2 million for the year 2001.

Why did you start your own business?
I always wanted to be my own boss, and I was selling fuels in my
past jobs, and I seen that there was an outlet in the market for
it.

What do you like best about being your own boss?
You can see the effect of your hard work.

What do you dislike most about working for yourself?
Nothing

Name three things you would do differently if you were starting
again?
More
thought into expenses, e.g. signage / adverts, etc.

Christine Waterson - Reflections
Christine
established Reflections in March 2000 and has since built a strong
customer base both north and south. She supplies a range of framed
prints and mirrors to retail outlets throughout Ireland. The business
employs 2 full time members of staff with a total of 16 years framing
experience between them.
The
business is located in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, which provides ideal
access to our closest export market. Christine also works closely
with a number of interior designers and has supplied framed artwork
for a number of developments in Dublin.
The
business has just completed its first trade show in Dublin, which
resulted in the business gaining new customers, and a number of
new contacts both north and south.

Why did you start your own business?
I
was already working in this line of work, however the company I
was working for closed down, so I decided this was the time to start
my own business.

What do you like best about being your own boss?
I
am accountable for all my decisions whether they are right or wrong,
I also have more control, therefore I am able to satisfy the customer
at all times.

What do you dislike most about working for yourself?
Financial
worries, chasing after unpaid invoices, working for little or no
wages, paperwork.
4.
Name three things you would do differently if you were starting
again?
I
probably wouldn't start again as there was so much red tape / hassle
involved the first time.

James Hegarty - Premier Movies
James
Hegarty opened "Premiere Movies" in February 1998 in Railway
Street in Strabane. Having gained experience working in video hire
and retail James felt he had a good understanding of what customers
wanted and felt he could supply it.

Why did you start your own business?
I
had previously worked in a similar business and saw an opening in
the market, I knew what needed to be done and saw what made the
customers come back and I went for it.

What do you like best about being your own boss?
I
don't have to answer to anyone, and it's a great feeling of satisfaction
when things are going well.

What do you dislike most about working for yourself?
Your
kind of married to your business, you've no set hours, you're the
last to get holidays, days off. If there's a problem then the buck
stops with you.

Name three things you would do differently if you were starting
again?

Adrian McGovern - McGovern
Memorials
Adrian
was a skilled stonemason from an early age, learning the trade from
his father in the family business, McGovern Memorials. Today both
father and son manage the business together from their premises
just outside Dromore. Adrian's sculpturing skills mean that he is
regarded as one of the best in the trade, but his involvement in
the management of the business, led to his position as a finalist
in the 1998 Shell Livewire NI Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
The
company is based on the guarantees of quality designs and products
while maintaining impeccable customer service. In addition to supplying
all types of granite, limestone and marble, the company has two
specialist fields of work - the supply and erection of headstone
memorials, grave surrounds and renovation work, and the letter engraving
and restoration of stone memorials. An interest in Celtic design
is evident in much of their work and one of their most outstanding
undertakings was the design and crafting of a large sandstone cross,
to be mounted in Fermanagh's Knockninny Parish as part of their
Millenium Project.

To
make money , it was a family business, just took it over and continued
it on.

Independence,

What do you dislike most about working for yourself?
Insecurity,
not a secure wage coming in each month. Chasing debtors.
